The Love of God
Peter Conolly, March 21

Love is an essential part of the character of God. In 1John 4 vs 8 and 16 we read that "God is love". In the words of perhaps the best known verse of the bible God expresses his love – “For God so loved the world (all the peoples of the world) that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life".

A good earthly father will love his children. Our heavenly father certainly does. He so loved. John uses the Greek word "agape" which is the supreme example of love. An earthly father gives. Our heavenly father certainly gave. He gave his only son which was the outgiving of his love. An earthly father will provide for his children. Our heavenly father has provided eternal life for us (John 3:16). The amazing thing is this – Jesus is saying God my father is giving you me!

What else can we learn about God’s love? In scripture we read the following:

•	God's love is unfailing (Ps 13:5)
•	God's is abounding (overflowing!!} in love (Neh 9:17)
•	God's love is everlasting (Jer 31:3)
•	God's love is great (Ps 5:7 and Eph 2:4)
•	God's love endures forever (Ps 136 - every verse reminds us of this)
•	God's love is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps 103:17)

and God himself is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps 90:2)

Now we love Him because He first loved us (1John 4:9) and Jesus encourages us to remain in His love (John 15:9} and to love one another deeply from the heart (1 Peter ! v 12).

Psalm 91 is one of the messianic psalms and it brings us a message about the oneness of God the father and God the Son. Yet the Psalm was written by a man, King David, and it demonstrates the love and closeness of David to God. What does God do for those who love Him? Verses 14-16 give seven answers to that question:-

•	Therefore will I deliver him

(v14 note the juxtaposition of 'I' and 'will' for added emphasis.)

•	I will set him on high (v14)
•	I will answer him ( v15)
•	I will be with him (v15
•	I  will deliver him, and honour him (v15}
•	With long life will I satisfy him (v16 - the juxtaposition again)
•	I will satisfy him and show him my salvation (v16)

True love shines brightly. Love builds up. Love unites. Love builds hope. Some Thoughts from Hymns.

Love divine, all loves excelling Joy of heaven, to earth come down!

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free; Rolling as a mighty ocean In its fullness over me.

On Calvary’s tree He died for me, That I His love might know. On Calvary’s tree He died for me, That’s why I love Him so.

From the hymn – There’s a Wideness in God’s mercy;
For the love of God is broader than the measure of our minds.

From the hymn – Beauty for Brokenness;
Change our love from a spark to a flame.

A Prayer For The Church as we Look to the Future !

Lord, we seek your presence today because we want you to take over our plans. We are afraid of straying from the best path if we have to choose our own direction.

Lord, the need to be successful in all things that we do is in us because we want to do it for you. We want to lay down before you the inmost desires of our hearts. We want to ask for blessings from you to be with our plans.

We have our dreams and hopes and we give them all to you for you know what is best for us Lord. We can only plan but the final decision will have to come from you.
